Betancuria Spain

Once the capital of Fuerteventura, Betancuria is a tiny mountain village that feels worlds away from the island’s busy beach resorts. Nestled in a rugged volcanic valley, its whitewashed houses, palm trees and cobbled lanes offer a peaceful glimpse into the archipelago’s past. The slower pace and dramatic scenery make it a perfect half‑day escape or a scenic stop on a road trip across the island. At the heart of the village stands the Church of Santa María, whose simple exterior hides an ornate baroque interior, carved wooden choir stalls and beautiful altarpieces. Around the main square you’ll find a handful of cafés and small restaurants where you can try local goat’s cheese, papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, and Canarian wines. Small craft shops sell ceramics, lace and local products that make easy-to-pack souvenirs. A short walk or drive away, the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum explains the life of the island’s original inhabitants and the early days of the Spanish conquest. The surrounding Betancuria Rural Park offers viewpoints over eroded valleys and bare, ochre-colored hills—stop at Mirador Morro Velosa for some of the best panoramas on the island. With its combination of history, landscape and tranquillity, Betancuria is one of Fuerteventura’s most rewarding inland detours.
